Diversity
Leicestershire Police Authority is committed to equality of opportunity and respect for Diversity. The Authority has its own Equality Scheme which is in the process of being updated.
The Police Authority has general duties and special duties under the Race Relations (Amendment) Act 2000. The general duties are to (a) eliminate racial discrimination, (b) promote equality of opportunity, and (c) promote good relations between people of different racial groups. The Authority's special duties include preparing and publishing a race equality scheme, making arrangements to publish the results of assessments, consultation and monitoring regarding policies procedures and functions that impact upon the general duties. The Authority must also make arrangements to ensure public access to information and services it provides and train its staff on the RRAA 2000 duties.
The Authority is applying the national standards laid down in the Home Office Strategy for Improving Performance in Race and Diversity 2004-2009.
However, diversity encompasses issues far wider than race alone. The Authority is keen to embrace all elements of diversity. It has therefore issued an Equality Scheme as part of its RRAA 2000 duties. The Scheme adopts equality issues of race and ethnicity, gender, sexuality, disability and other issues. A copy of our Equality Scheme is on this website, in the Information - Library section.
One area where the Authority undertakes its role is in the provision of information of people's rights when Police Officers stop or stop and search an individual. Nationally drafted guidance sheets are available on in the Information - Library section of this site. Locally Leicestershire Constabulary keep detailed data on stops and the stop and searches they make. Details of the latest data and further information is available on application to the Clerk to the Authority.
