Chief Constable Recruitment

[27 Aug. 09] The Police Authority confirmed today that Matt Baggott Chief Constable of Leicestershire Constabulary will leave to take up post as the Chief Constable for the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) on 21 September 2009.

The Police Authority have appointed the current Deputy Chief Constable, Chris Eyre to act as Chief until a permanent replacement is found.  Ministerial consent will be sought for the current Assistant Chief Constable (Operations), Mike Goodwin, to become Temporary Deputy Chief Constable.

The recruitment process to appoint a new Chief Constable has already begun. 7 members of the Police Authority will serve on the Appointments Committee which will find the new Chief.  Ministerial consent is required for the role and the new permanent Chief Constable will be in post in the New Year.

Byron Rhodes, Chairman of Leicestershire Police Authority said,

Notes:             

1. Ministerial approval required for the position is undertaken with the aid of the Central Senior Appointments Panel.

2. Leicestershire Police Authority monitors the Leicestershire Constabulary and appoints its Chief Officers.  The Constabulary polices the area of Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland. 

3. Police Authorities are independent bodies made up of local people.  Police Authorities hold the Police Force to account on behalf of local communities.  One of their duties is to appoint senior officers to the Constabulary, such as Assistant Chief Constables.

4. Local Police Authorities along with the Home Secretary and Chief Officers of Police make up the tripartite relationship which is responsible for the governance of policing in England and Wales.
