The Leicestershire Police Authority, advised by its Treasurer, is responsible for the overall financial structure of the Constabulary. The Police Authority sets the annual budget and precept, and approves the annual accounts.

Within that overall structure the Chief Constable, advised by the Force Finance Director, manages all day to day financial activity and provides the Authority with regular monitoring information.

The Authority is ranked very highly in terms of its use of financial resources. The latest Audit Commission report described it as "Consistently above minimum requirements -performing well". Following inspection by Her Majesty's Inspector of Constabulary, the Times newspaper ranked the Force 5th out of 43 in its league table of Forces.

The process starts in the autumn of the preceding year with the preparation of an annual budget. That is normally approved in February and a precept (the amount to be collected by way of council tax) set.

At the end of the year a Statement of Accounts is prepared, and approved by the Authority by the end of June. The accounts are subject to audit by the Audit Commission, who present an Audit Letter to the Authority. The Authority also produces a summary set of accounts to aid understanding of the sometimes complex financial picture.

For each financial year there can be accessed:

The Annual Budget, a report that sets out how we plan to use available resources to achieve our objectives for the year.

The Capital Programme, a report that sets out plans to invest in property, vehicles, and equipment over a three year period.

The Precept Notice, a summary of the annual budget, sent to every household, setting out information about our objectives and performance.

The Annual Statement of Accounts, a statutory publication showing how we used public money during the year.

A Summary of the Accounts, showing abbreviated information so that performance against the budget for the year can be compared.

The Annual Audit Letter, published by the Audit Commission.
